Gremlins

By: DJ Hopson

You turned away from me
late at night in the train station
and you let my hand fall to my side.
The train was coming - once, twice
and finally through the third wind tunnel
my decrepit carriage came to a stop.
Half my smile told you half of the truth.

3am is late to travel alone
so you rode with me
to watch me and to protect me. I
never said I needed to be protected
from the gremlins living underground
where I was traveling that might bite me
and drag me away from life.

I told you with all five fingers to
go home, to look out for the gremlins
so they wouldn’t bite you. And
with all of your five fingers you
took my hand back in yours.
